Tenants need to know their responsibilities

Home insurance customers who are living in privately rented accommodation should make sure they know what their responsibilities are in winter, according to an expert.
The Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) said that tenants need to make sure to read their lease to be satisfied that they know what is expected of them in terms of making the home safe from winter damage.
ARLA says that many landlords demand that their tenants leave heating on to some level throughout winter to avoid the hassle and damage of frozen and burst pipes.
Ian Potter, ARLA's operations manager, said: "It would be pragmatic for tenants to consider ways to best prepare their property for cold spells. This is particularly important for those who will be leaving their rented home vacant during the holiday period."
Churchill Insurance reported recently that three million homes were damaged by winter weather last year.
