UK 'could face flooding'
By Marianne Straker, Fri 15 Jan 2010 - Published in Home Insurance
The UK's homes could be at risk of flooding as the country heads into a thaw, it has been suggested.
Zurich Insurance pointed out that warmer temperatures and heavy rain are expected to hit the country in the coming days, which could cause serious problems with localised flooding as ice and snow melts.
The organisation said that local authorities which have been afflicted by heavy snow should prepare themselves for flooding.
Andrew Jepp, head of local government at the firm, reminded homeowners that burst pipes could have gone unnoticed through the cold spell and cause further problems when they thaw.
He recommended that home insurance customers take "simple steps, such as reminding yourselves of the location of stopcocks, so water can be quickly turned off in an emergency and checking external gutters and soffits where water can gather".
LV= Home Insurance recently said that people should thoroughly check their properties for any pipes which may have frozen or burst during the cold weather.
