Wedding gifts 'should be covered by insurance'

Newlyweds should ensure they take out contents insurance to cover their wedding gifts, it has been claimed.

According to insurer Direct Line, a wedding with just 50 guests could mean adding £3,950 worth of gifts to the value of their home's contents.

Andrew Lowe, head of home insurance at the group, commented that the value of home contents can quickly rise around the time of a wedding.

He went on to say that the costs of the wedding dress, flowers, jewellery and outfits for the wedding party can easily run to many thousands of pounds.

"It will be a shrewd newlywed who checks their insurance policy to make sure that all of their purchases and gifts are protected in the event of loss, damage or theft," added Mr Lowe.

Earlier this month, research by the Fair Investment Company found around three-quarters of people in the UK have avoided debt since the start of the recession.
