Winter 'brings burst pipe risk'

People need to protect their water pipes during winter to prevent accidents, it has been suggested.
Home insurance provider Aviva revealed that there was a 500 per cent increase in claims for water damage when temperatures plummeted last year,
The organisation revealed that the majority of claims were caused by burst pipes or loft tanks and said that people need to be aware of these risks, especially if they intend to spend part of the Christmas break away from home.
Greg Gladwell, director of household claims at Aviva, advised homeowners to ask a friend to regularly call round to their house when they are absent, in order to spot if any damage has occurred.
"Last winter we had some of the iciest temperatures in years and for some a relaxing Christmas break was ruined as they returned to a drenched home," he added.
Recently, Crimestoppers reminded homeowners of the need to protect themselves against burglary during the festive period, especially when their houses are full of Christmas presents.
