The pet insurance provider Petplan has revealed its largest ever animal and owner census.

Released today, Petplan's, Pet Census 2011 can be split into four clear themes; Compassion and Relationships, Diet and Wellbeing, Purchasing and Social Behaviour.

Collecting information from more than 10,000 pet-owners the census asked questions on a number of topics, it even found that 65 per cent of respondents believe their pet is more reliable than their spouse.

Alison Andrew, head of marketing at Petplan, said: "Despite criticism that we are an uncaring society, the fact that 23 per cent of pet owners take compassionate leave when a pet passes, shows that pets and owners share a very close and empathetic bond."

She added that the census highlighted that pets play an enormous role in the lives of their owners; in many cases they have a similar impact as a human influence.

Research from The Co-operative Pet Insurance revealed that nearly a third of animal owners believe the death of a pet is nearly as bad as losing a family member
