Cigarettes 'make savings go up in smoke'

Non-smokers will pay £5,670 less on critical insurance cover over the next 25 years than those who still have the habit, it has been claimed.

Research carried out by price comparison website Moneysupermarket.com indicates quitters could also have saved £2,740 on the cost of cigarettes since the ban on smoking in public places came in July 2007.

Emma Walker, head of protection at the company, commented that there is no denying the benefits of quitting.

"It's a shame to see the number of Brits kicking the habit has slowed since the smoking ban came into force - unfortunately those amongst us still puffing away are effectively letting their hard-earned cash go up in smoke," she added.

Ms Walker went on to say those who have recently given up smoking should shop around for the best insurance deals currently available on the market.

This week, financial services provider LifeSearch commented that shopping around is the key to picking up the best life insurance policies in the current economic climate.
