Couples 'should think of insurance'

Wedding insurance is an increasingly important consideration for couple as the cost of their big day rises, experts have suggested.

According to British Insurance Brokers Association (Biba), everyone who is planning their wedding should examine the cost of the day and evaluate what risks they face.

If they consider that the amount they could lose should anything go wrong is too high, the organisation recommends they contact a broker to help them arrange the cover.

However, Peter Staddon, a spokesperson for Biba, added: "It does not provide cover for the non-appearance of the bride or groom, unless there has been an intervening cause, like an illness or injury."

According to Easier Travel, research from First Choice Travel Shops and Holiday Hypermarkets showed the average cost of a wedding in the UK is around £11,000, with 57 per cent saying they would consider marrying aboard.

In addition, the cost of an overseas wedding averaged £520, making it a cheaper option even when factors such as travel insurance are included.
