Government 'should pay for life insurance for the armed forces in Iraq'
Tue 17 Jun 2008 - Published in Life Insurance
The government should provide life insurance for military personnel engaged in the war effort abroad, according to Buckles Investment Services.
Richard Eling, investment director of Buckles Investment Services, said that it is understandable that insurance providers increase premiums for those serving in the armed forces.
However, he added that responsibility to provide some kind of proper insurance that does not come out of a soldier's pay should ultimately lie with the government.
Mr Eling stated: "It's a bit rich to send someone to Iraq on £18,000 a year and then ask them to pay for their own insurance cover."
Since the start of the war in Iraq in 2003, 176 British soldiers have lost their lives.
A total of 4,099 US soldiers have also been killed and a further 29,978 US military personnel have been wounded over the course of the war.
