Life insurance policyholders looking to leave money behind for their loved ones should prioritise the writing of a will as soon as possible to avoid problems should anything happen to them.

A survey released by Macmillan Cancer Support earlier this week revealed that almost half (46 per cent) of the British public shun talking about death because it is unpleasant. The survey also discovered that 70 per cent of people in the UK have not written a will, which could give dependants an extra monetary injection to help alongside life insurance payouts.

According to Brian McMillan, director general of the Society of Will Writers, said that these days writing a will is more important than ever, especially with people being married more than once and having children from previous marriages.

Mr McMillan also went on to outline the cause of people not to making a will: "The reasons are the fear factor; they are fearful that by making a will they are tempting fate, which of course they aren’t, and apathy; there is always tomorrow."
