Making a will 'is very important'

Opting to make a will should be an almost compulsory move for UK residents, but individuals should not attempt to write it themselves, an expert has suggested.

Director of independent financial advisory group Forum Wealth, Ian Wilson, said that turning to a solicitor for help at writing a will is a necessary step as individuals only have one chance of getting it right.

"You should never ever try and write it yourself or use a will planning kit. They can work but you only get one chance of getting your will right," said Mr Wilson.

He also noted that the risk of not creating a will is that you will not control where money goes when you die.

A report from the International Longevity Centre UK found that between 1996 and 2000, one in 40 people inherited an average of £17,500 and that the average estate left some £90,000 in net tax.
