People who are considered obese because they have a high Body Mass Index (BMI) are suffering increasingly harsh treatment at the hands of life insurers, according to LifeSearch.

The protection specialist points out that a number of the England rugby team can technically be classified as obese.

It states that the England captain, Nick Easter, has a BMI of 30.9, which could lead to him being refused life insurance cover, despite the fact he is one of the world's top sportsmen.

If your BMI is considered to be too high, usually over 30, insurers may increase your premium, if they agree to cover you at all.

LifeSearch states that there is no standard procedure for this and each company will make its own decision on the level of premium hikes.

It claims a good independent adviser can help you to save money as it will know which insurer will be able to offer you the best deal depending on your specific circumstances.

Meanwhile, Plan Insure has warned that not taking out life insurance with your mortgage is a risky strategy.
