Over 50s 'want to avoid waiting lists'

New research has shown that avoiding NHS waiting lists is the main priority of patients over 50, which may show the need for health insurance.

A poll carried out by Saga Health also found that choice of when and where to be treated, the cleanliness of hospitals and the ability to recuperate in comfort are other top concerns of the age group.

Furthermore, over 50s are looking for a better quality of care and to have a choice of consultant.

The survey also revealed that 90 per cent of over 50s in private medical accommodation feel comfortable to receive guests, compared to just 37 per cent in NHS wards.

Andrew Goodsell, executive chairman of the Saga Group, said: "Today's over 50s are more active than ever before and want to live life to the full. If they suffer a medical problem they want to get treated and recuperate as quickly as possible."

Earlier this month, Saga Group found that 58 per cent of the over 50s believe the government should fully pay for the care needs of older people.
