Quitting smoking 'leads to significant savings'

Brits could have saved more than £4,000 if they gave up cigarettes when the public smoking ban was introduced in July 2007, research has shown.

A study carried out by price comparison website moneysupermarket.com revealed that the average smoker would have saved themselves £4,190 on the cost of cigarettes if they packed in the habit three years ago.

However, the research showed that despite this, the rate of people quitting smoking is falling with 31 per cent giving up the habit in 2007 but only 26 per cent doing so in 2008 and 2009.

Emma Walker, head of protection at moneysupermarket.com, commented: "It's disappointing less Brits are kicking the habit recently [when] compared to when the smoking ban came into force - those still puffing away are effectively letting their hard earned cash go up in smoke."

In addition, the study pointed out that non-smokers often benefit from cheaper critical illness cover than those who smoke.

Last week, British Heart Foundation senior cardiac nurse June Davison stressed the importance of encouraging others to quit smoking, as the risk of cardiovascular disease is increased by passive smoking.
