Debt advice 'can help with serious problems'

People should seek help with their debt no matter how severe the problem has become, it has been suggested.

David Harker, chief executive of Citizens Advice Bureau, said that even people facing serious circumstances such as a court hearing concerning the repossession of their home can still benefit from the services provided by advice agencies.

"Many people are often surprised at the level of help they can get for free from our impartial agencies and the earlier on an issue is identified, the easier it is to resolve," he explained.

Steve Johnson, chief executive of AdviceUK, added that such services are often used to deal with complicated financial problems which have been developing for several years.

He also pointed out that advisors are trained to negotiate extra time or resources at the last minute of proceedings to help people start to resolve their debts.

Recently, research published by the Royal College of Psychiatrists and Rethink found that being in debt is a serious risk factor for people's mental health problems.
