A-level students are being put off university by the thought of the debt they may accumulate through loans, credit cards and overdrafts, new research has revealed.
A survey by Greenwich University has found school leavers who have the capability to move on to higher education may give it a miss as a result of financial concerns and misconceptions.
Margaret Noble, the pro-vice chancellor of Greenwich University, said it is important for young people and their parents to consider the full range of accommodation options available and look for any support provided for their particular programme of study.
"I would very much advise students to think about contacting the various help-lines that are available, talk to advisors and find out about that," she added.
The research carried out by Greenwich University revealed 83 per cent of A-level students were unaware that maintenance grants of up to £2,830 are available to students whose families earns less than £60,000.
