Outstanding loans and debt can have 'strange' effects on...

Brits who've built up debt with loans and credit are not equipped to deal with constant stress like money worries.

This is according to Taming the Pound, which claims that people have evolved to either run from or fight a threat, but not live with it like they have to with loans and debt.

Kim Stephenson, occupational psychologist and founder of the online resource, said: "We're not designed to deal with constant stress like ongoing financial problems. If we face them, it does strange things to our body and brain chemistry.

"It can result in us being physically ill or having relationship or mental problems."

Recently, research from The Lancet revealed that across Europe suicide rates between 2007 and 2009 increased in most countries.

The report highlighted that some of the factors which could have influenced these figures were higher unemployment and greater money problems for many people.
