People who take a carefree attitude to their finances will be in for a shock when their fuel bills arrive, they have been warned.
As homeowners manage their household budgets, such as food and home insurance, one expert says there are things they can do to save money.
Melanie Russell, head of communications at Anglian Home Improvements, advises people to use energy saving light bulbs, switch appliances off and turn the thermostat down.
"Perhaps we have all got a little bit carefree about these things and haven't thought much about it," she comments.
As the cold and dark nights draw in, people use more fuel and electricity and will end up with a big shock when the next bills arrive, Ms Russell adds.
By switching things off, comma homeowners will be amazed at how much money they can save over the year, she concludes.
Figures from the Energy Efficiency Partnership for Homes claim that £6.8 billion is wasted on energy in the UK every year equivalent to £113 per person.
