Housing market 'had a strong month in July'

July was one of the strongest months of 2010 so far for the UK's housing market, it has been claimed.

The National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) monthly market report showed that more sellers put their homes on the market, demand for housing rose and the number of sales per agent increased.

According to the research, agents' books held an average of 68 properties in July, rising from 59 in the previous month. In addition, they had 292 registered house hunters in the month, rising from 279.

NAEA president Michael Jones commented: "Demand and supply both increased in July, which is great news for the housing market."

However, he pointed out that the recovery from the economic downturn is "slow, steady and patently fragile" and called on lenders to offer more mortgages.

Recent research from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors claimed that house prices in the UK fell during July, for the first time in one year.
