Moving overseas 'a massive decision'

People need to carefully weigh up their choices when choosing to move overseas, an expert has suggested.

Paul Collins, editor at BuyAssociation, claimed that many people neglect to consider all their needs when they are moving abroad and could end up in a property which is not the best for them.

He commented: "People may end up moving somewhere that is possibly a little bit isolated, that maybe doesn't have the swift access to things like healthcare or even just local facilities."

Mr Collins also said many expats fail to appreciate how much they will miss members of their family who have remained in the UK and have difficulty fitting into the local culture.

The expert recommended that property buyers use an independent lawyer when moving overseas, rather than relying on a firm that also represents the developers they are dealing with.

Recent research from Standard Life found that Spain is the UK's top overseas retirement destination, followed by France, the US, Canada and Ireland.
