Retirement age scrap 'needs a clear timetable'

The coalition government needs to set out clear plans for the phasing out of the default retirement age, it has been suggested.

Michelle Mitchell, Age UK charity director, pointed out that the government recently confirmed it will review how this can be done, but offered no guide as to over what timescale the plans will be implemented.

"The government should now set a clear timetable to end speculation and confusion among employers and employees alike," she commented.

Earlier this week, research from Aviva found that 68 per cent of UK adults, or around 33 million people, plan to stay in employment past the retirement age, while one in ten think they will never stop working.

Commenting on the research, Ms Mitchell noted that employers currently have the right to stop people from working, which could scupper their plans to stay in jobs for longer.

She added that this is another reason for the government to schedule an end to the UK's default retirement age.
