Adopting animals 'requires a financial commitment'

Animal lovers need to be prepared for the financial commitment which comes with adopting a dog from a rescue centre, it has been suggested.

M&S Pet Insurance pointed out that many animals are abandoned each year and claimed 32 per cent of people obtained their pet dog from an animal rescue centre.

Andrew Ferguson, M&S head of general insurance, commented: "Becoming a pet owner can be a very enjoyable and rewarding experience, particularly when providing a loving home to a cat or dog that has previously been abandoned."

However, he stressed that adopting an animal requires a significant amount of time and money, as some breeds are more prone to illness than others and larger dogs will need more exercise and food.

Earlier this month, Joe Inglis, The One Show's resident vet, highlighted that lungworm, which is a parasitic disease in dogs caused by slugs and snails, is a growing problem in the UK.
