Animal owners urged to get pet insurance

More than half of vets have had to put down pets in the past five years because their owners could not pay for treatments and they did not have pet insurance to cover the care, new research has shown.
The findings from Sainsbury's Finance showed that 88 per cent of vets have also had their advised treatment options rejected by owners because they could not afford to pay for it.
It said that pet insurance will solve these cost dilemmas adding that not having the cover is a false economy.
Joanne Mallon, pet insurance manager for Sainsbury's Finance, said: "Advances in veterinary science mean that our pets can get the best treatment possible these days, but these improvements ... come at higher costs and the financial burden is being felt by pet owners."
Ben Jones, Petplan's vet of the year, recently warned that pets need more care in the cold weather, to avoid making a pet insurance claim. He urged owners to keep dogs inside when it is cold and give them extra blankets.
