Animals 'need pet insurance during the first year'

Pet insurance is especially important during the first year of an animal's life, according to the former president of the British Veterinary Association.
John Bower said: "I would strongly recommend that people insure at least the first year because that is probably the most dangerous time."
He stated that pet owners should also make sure their cats and dogs are covered from the age of eight as that is when they are most likely to start getting ill.
Mr Bower added that owners should declare any pre-existing conditions to insurance companies.
He said they might not provide cover for that particular illness but insure the pet for other conditions which may arise.
A study by the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals has found that over the past 12 months there has been a ten per cent increase in the number of overweight animals.
Some 30 per cent of dogs in the UK are now overweight.
