Some 2.4 million people leave their dogs alone for over five hours every day, it has been revealed.
In news which highlights the need for comprehensive pet insurance, research carried out by Sainsbury's Bank indicates 750,000 dog owners are leaving their canine companions alone in the house during the working week for eight hours or more per day, while over one million have left them alone for over one full day.
Joanne Mallon, Sainsbury's pet insurance manager, said that dogs are highly sociable animals that can find being home alone distressing.
"Owners struggling to provide sufficient company themselves should consider dog walking and dog-sitting services or call on assistance from family or neighbours," she added.
In April, studies by Sainsbury's Bank suggested 12 per cent of cats and dogs under the age of three suffer from some form of medical condition that requires treatment from a vet.
The group added that if a pet insurance claim is discovered to be for a pre-existing condition it is unlikely to be covered.
