Canine calamities 'happen in summer'

The summer months can be a dangerous time for dogs, pet insurance holders have been warned.
According to M&S Pet Insurance's advice line, several animal lovers have been in touch about injuries sustained by their canine companions over the summer.
Clare Scantlebury, deputy operations manager at the phone line, said: "It's lovely for pets and their owners to enjoy being out and about during the summer, but they need to be aware of hidden dangers which, although rare, do cause real problems."
One of these concerned a five-year-old crossbreed from Shropshire who injured her teeth after she ran into a washing line while carrying a frisbee in her mouth.
A month-old English bull terrier also swallowed a large frog when enjoying a walk, while a springer spaniel from Surrey wolfed down a large amount of walnuts, which can cause dogs to suffer upset stomachs and diarrhoea.
Last month, research from Sainsbury's Finance found that one in five dog and cat owners have noticed behavioural problems in their pets over the past year.
