Dogs need as much exercise in winter

Animal lovers shopping for pet insurance should consider the welfare of their dog throughout the winter month, as they still need as much exercise as in the better weather, according to one expert.

Sarah Linehan, qualified dog behaviourist and trainer at the Pet Experience, said that it is vital for dogs to be allowed out, even if their owners are feeling the cold.

She said that for many people, less walks for their dog is a reality in the colder months as rain and snow entice more people to stay inside, which can lead to severe behavioural problems for pets.

Ms Linehan said that dogs become bored and frustrated if they cannot go outside, as they do not feel the effects of weather as much as their owners do.

"Dogs don't care about the weather in the way that we do and it is important that owners recognise this and keep up their daily walks," she added.

Last week, pet owners were warned by Co-operative Insurance that dogs behaviour can change in winter as they become confused by the increased hours of darkness.
