Dogs' play 'needs to be safe'

Dog owners should avoid a claim on pet insurance by ensuring their canine companions play safely, it has been suggested.
According to Sainsbury's Pet Insurance, an estimated 25,800 claims are put forward each year for laceration injuries to dogs, amounting to a bill of around £4.92 million.
The organisation said that many of these are linked to dogs catching sticks, which can then lead to further complications such as septicaemia caused by foreign bacteria.
Furthermore, the group claimed that allowing dogs to swim in ponds can expose them to poisonous algae and see them suffer from vomiting and diarrhoea.
The firm added that pets experiencing these conditions lead to around £9.30 million in claims settlements each year.
Lucy Hunter, Sainsbury's Pet Insurance manager, commented: "Dogs do need to be able to run around, but simple steps can be taken to reduce the chances of them being injured or picking up an illness."
Earlier this year, the company claimed that 20 per cent of cat and dog owners have seen behavioural problems in their pet.
