Dogs' teeth need regular maintenance

Dog lovers with pet insurance policies should ensure that they are making the health of their beloved pet's teeth a priority when they are grooming.

Your Dog magazine urged pet owners to groom their pet regularly, checking for any lumps and bumps as they do so, to catch any health issues early. Now one expert has said that people can add checking teeth to that routine.

Whilst dogs do not get teeth cavities, Paula Boyden, veterinary director with the Dogs Trust, says that without regular brushing a dog can develop a build up of scale which, if serious, can need veterinary assistance to be removed.

"Prevention, through regular brushing is of course better in the first place," Ms Boyden said.

A build up of scale on the teeth of a dog can eventually lead to gum disease, and in more serious cases the animal can suffer the loss of its teeth.
