New research has claimed that UK businesses are losing £18 million each year due to staff taking time off to look after sick or dying pets.

A study conducted by LV= pet insurance found that 11 per cent of people have missed work so they could nurse an ill pet, while another 11 per cent were absent to mourn a dead animal.

In addition, the research showed the average amount of time taken off to deal with a sick or dead pet was 2.4 days.

The poll also revealed that 24 per cent of people lied to their boss about the reason for their absence and claimed it was because of their illness.

Emma Holyer, LV= pet insurance spokesperson, said: "It's clearly an upsetting time when a beloved pet is sick or dying and this report shows that many people suffer as much they would for a friend or relative."

Recent research by M&S Pet Insurance found 63 per cent of cat and dog owners would pull out of a date if their animal companion fell ill.
