Half of pets have fish and chips each week

Owners are putting the health of their beloved animals at risk by feeding them fast food.

Research from MoreTh>n Pet Insurance revealed that one in three cats and dogs are now overweight.

This could stem from the fact that over seven million are treated to fish and chips each week, while burgers, a slice of pizza, chicken tikka masala and roast dinners are also making it on to pets' menus.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, animal nutritionist Stephanie Mehanna said: "Obesity in pets is a serious issue and has become a much more common problem over the past few years."

She added that by allowing household pets to eat human food, owners are adding "a serious amount of extra calories into their diets" while also giving them ingredients which cannot be tolerated.

This includes chocolate, which can prove to be toxic and even fatal for some pets, despite recent research showing that it can be beneficial for human health.
