Ill pets can cost Brits over £300 a year

Pet owners spend on average over £300 every year looking after ill animals, it has been claimed.

Research by the Co-operative revealed to pet insurance policyholders that treatment for dogs and cats is getting expensive and many Brits take time off work to look after their poorly canines and felines.

Despite this, nearly two-thirds of animal owners still do not have pet insurance and around a third stated that they put off taking their pooches to the vets because of the cost.

Lee Mooney, head of pet insurance at the Co-operative, said; "As pets are at the heart of the family, owners are spending considerable amounts of time and money to nurse their animals back to full strength."

He advised people to put some money aside to take out cover for their animals to help combat expensive treatment costs.

Sainsbury's Pet Insurance recently revealed that during the average lifetime of a pet the cost of owning a cat or dog currently stands at around £17,000.
