Pet insurance customers have been warned about the increasing lungworm problem in dogs.
Joe Inglis, The One Show's resident vet, explained that the condition is a parasitic disease which is caused by slugs and snails and has become more common over the past few years.
"It can be very serious and is spreading across the country, causing increasing risk to dog owners," he added.
The expert also claimed that 53 per cent of dog owners have never heard of lungworm, "partly because it is a new disease in many parts of the country".
In addition, Mr Inglis reminded dog owners to be alert to the symptoms of the disease in their pets, pointing out that warning signs include bleeding in the mouth and gums, coughing and breathlessness.
According to lungworm.co.uk, dogs can be treated with a parasite control programme which reduces the chances of them being affected by lungworm.
The source also recommended that people take their dog to the vet if they have eaten a slug or snail.
