Microchips 'can reduce pet insurance costs'

Pet owners looking for ways to reduce the cost of pet insurance cover for their animals could consider having microchips implanted in the animals, an expert has suggested.

Asia Manzoor, a spokesperson for esure pet insurance, said that making such a move would not only reduce the cost of cover but would also add an extra level of security.

Using a microchip will "not only reduce the cost of insuring your dog, but will also give dog owners the security that should their beloved pet go astray, the chances of the dog being returned to their owner is much higher".

And opting for cover also offers protection for vet bills should an animal become ill or need some for of treatment, she said.

Ms Manzoor pointed out that vet bills can run to thousands of pounds and an insurance policy can cover these costs.

Recent research from Sainsbury's Finance found that some 897,000 pet owners believed they did not need insurance because their animal was healthy.
