Millions 'believe pets were stolen'

Almost four million pet cats and dogs have gone missing in the last five years, it has been revealed.

In news which underlines the need for comprehensive pet insurance, research carried out by Sainsbury's Bank indicates one in five people whose animals have been lost believe they were stolen.

Lucy Hunter, Sainsbury's pet insurance manager, commented that last year more than 50 cats went missing in Stourbridge in the West Midlands - with the area becoming known as a 'feline Bermuda Triangle'.

Highlighting the need for pet insurance policies to be selected carefully, she added: "It's worth noting that not all pet insurance polices recognise the importance of providing support in the form of advertising or reward benefits to owners who have lost their pet."

Last month, Saga Pet Insurance stressed that chocolates and titbits lovingly fed to pets as treats can often do the animals more harm than good.
