More promotion of pet insurance needed

More information and advice is needed about pet insurance, to ensure owners understand the importance of the product, it has been claimed.
In a discussion on the issue, experts suggested promoting the importance of pet insurance to owners and vets to encourage more to take up the cover.
Andrew Haslip, from analyst Datamonitor, said a key strategy would be to target people from groups which are unlikely to take out the cover such as those on lower incomes or the elderly.
Steve Dixon, a veterinary surgeon from Calder Vets, also claimed practitioners themselves need more education about pet insurance and called for increased advertising to make everyone aware of it.
Victoria Jackson, also from Calder Vets, added: "There isn't really anything available for people in general practice to learn more about policies at the moment and that would certainly be one way to get the information across to people."
During the discussion, it was revealed that 80 per cent of vets had to put down a cat or dog in the past five years because the owner could not afford the necessary treatment.
