Pet insurance: Animal rich-list announced

An Alsatian named Gunther IV has been named top-dog in pet insurance provider Petplan's 2009 Pet Rich List, having a staggering £224.6 million to his name.

The list also includes a chimpanzee with a bank balance to rival Richard Branson's, a once homeless cat and a millionaire hen, all with account figures which might leave you feeling as sick as a parrot.

Gunther IV, who regularly dines on caviar and steak, owns multiple properties including Madonna's mansion in Miami. His fortune was left to him by his father Gunther III, who inherited it from his owner Countess Karlotta Libenstein.

Dogs and cats are the most successful in the list, however, more exotic animals also appear, such as Silverstone the tortoise and Keiko the killer whale, star of the Free Willy trilogy of films.

Petplan's spokesperson Alison Andrew said: "We know pets play a special role in their owner's lives and the 2009 Pet Rich List highlights the lengths that some owners go to provide for their furry friends."

Veterinary charity PDSA recently produced a guide urging owners to take out pet insurance, warning of the expensive costs they might have to pay if their animal became ill.
