The average vet bill for dog owners in the UK is £320.92, but those who have a pedigree pooch the cost is likely to be considerably higher, according to Saga Pet Insurance.

Earlier this week, a BBC documentary revealed pedigree dogs in Britain are suffering from a range of genetic diseases after years of inbreeding.

Saga claims that out of the seven million dogs in the UK, 75 per cent are pedigrees and their owners shell out over £10 million pounds in vet fees each week.

It states owners can expect to pay up to £4,000 if their dog fractures a bone and up to £10,000 if their animal has a tumour or spinal disorder.

Commenting on the findings, Andrew Goodsell, chief executive at Saga, said: "Without appropriate insurance in place owners could be faced with the prospect of having to withhold care because it's simply too expensive."

Meanwhile, More Th>n Pet Insurance claims prospective dog owners should look for symptoms of genetic diseases when buying a dog.
