Anyone with an animal at home should invest in pet insurance, according to Churchill.
Head of pet insurance Chris Price said the price of monthly premiums would "pale into insignificance" against the costs involved if an animal was hit by a car or stolen.
He added: "In worse case situations, animals have been put to sleep because their owner could not afford the cost of their medical treatment."
Mr Price said certain pets were more at risk of hereditary illnesses but he advised all animal lovers to make sure they had cover.
Animal Friends Insurance claims one in three pet owners makes a claim annually.
It also states that vet fees are currently rising by about 12 per cent each year.
Meanwhile, research by Defaqto last year revealed there are around ten million cats and seven million dogs in the UK but only 17 per cent of cats and 32 per cent of dogs are insured.
