Behavioural problems with cats and dogs are a major issue for pet owners, according to new research.

Figures published by Sainsbury's Insurance suggests that pet owners should make sure they have adequate pet insurance policies in place because behavioural problems are becoming increasingly common.

Some 3.35 million cat and dog owners have witnessed behavioural problems in their pet over the past 12 months, the survey suggested, meaning 18 per cent of the nation's cats and dogs are suffering from some sort of behavioural problem.

"The current economic climate is placing a lot of people under increased stress and unfortunately this anxiety can have an adverse effect on the household's pets," explained Joanne Mallon, pet insurance manager at Sainsbury's.

She continued: "Cats and dogs can be very sensitive to their owner's feelings and behaviour so changes in mood such as irritability, distress or remoteness could be sensed and leave the animal themselves, agitated or depressed."

Meanwhile, pet owners have been warned to make sure they are looking after their pets during the warm weather.

Owners are advised to regularly change their pets' water and even put ice in it when temperatures soar to ensure the animals do not overheat and require a trip to the vet and a claim on the pet insurance.
