Pets can cost over £17,000 during their lifetime for owners

The average lifetime cost of owning a dog or cat today stands at around £17,000, according to a report from Sainsbury's Pet Insurance.

Its research found that the annual price tag of having a canine or feline is over £1,100 per annum.

On top of this, the report found that food accounts for over a third of this cost, while vet fees make up around 15 per cent of the yearly total.

However, the organisation noted that veterinary treatment is set to increase by around 15 per cent per annum, so it is important to take out a policy to protect pets.

Recently, the Kennel Club noted that when people are contemplating buying a canine it is imperative they get cover for it.

Caroline Kisko, a spokeswoman for the organisation, said: "Two out of three pets require veterinary treatment each year and vet bills can account for up to 30 per cent of the total cost of owning a dog over its lifetime."
