Pets 'need extra attention in cold weather'

People should ensure that their canine companies, feline friends and other animal associates are protected from the cold weather to avoid preventable pet insurance claims.

Petplan pointed out that the cold snap which is hitting the UK has caused many people to wrap themselves up, but pointed out the importance of making sure furry friends are also looked after.

Ben Jones, Petplan's vet of the year, said that owners should avoid taking dogs out it the weather is too cold and recommended they have plenty of toys in the home to keep them active in the absence of their regular exercise.

In addition, dogs which are being taken for a walk should be checked to ensure grit and road salt is not harming their paws, while they should be stopped from running onto frozen ponds or canals.

The expert also said that old or debilitated animals should be provided with extra warm blankets and bedding to prevent them being cold at night and arthritic pets should be kept indoors at all times to stop them from suffering.

LV= pet insurance recently claimed that UK businesses lose £18 million each year in working hours due to staff taking time off to look after sick or dying animals.
