Pets 'receive £157m of Christmas gifts'

Brits will spend an estimated £157 million on their cats and dogs this Christmas, it has been claimed, which may interest pet insurance customers.

Research by Gocompare.com found that 69 per cent of pet owners will buy a yuletide gift for their furry friends, with the average person spending £10.86 on each animal companion.

Food treats are the most popular Christmas gift for pets, with 59 per cent of owners plumping for these, while 56 per cent will buy toys.

In addition, one-third of cats and dogs will receive their own Christmas stocking on December 25th and one-quarter will enjoy a special festive lunch.

Lee Griffin, business development director at Gocompare.com, said: "For many people their cat or dog is as much a part of the family as Auntie Mable, so it is perhaps only natural that they should want to share the joys of Christmas gift giving with them."

The poll also found that 63 per cent of owners will spend more on Christmas presents for their pets than their close friends, while 13 per cent of partners will receive a gift worth less than the pet's.

Recently, a survey by Saga Pet Insurance found that 53 per cent of cat and dog owners aged over 50 buy their pets a festive gift, while 28 per cent will treat their animals to a full Christmas stocking.
