Pets still need winter exercise

Dog owners who are shopping for pet insurance policies should consider the health and happiness of their pets this year, as many may not realise the importance of keeping up the amount of exercise they get in winter months.

Sarah Linehan, qualified dog behaviourist and trainer at the Pet Experience, said that most dogs will get walked a lot less in winter as the snow and cold starts to set in.

The expert advised owners to keep their schedule as similar as they can to the warmer times of the year to make sure that dogs stay calm, as even a slight change in activity can affect their behaviour.

She went on to say that dogs experiencing a drop in exercise level can easily become bored and frustrated.

"Dogs don't care about the weather in the way that we do and it is important that owners recognise this and keep up their daily walks," Ms Linehan added.

The Co-operative Insurance warned pet owners last week that the change in the hours of darkness in winter can cause dogs to become stressed.
