Pets 'struggle to cope on bonfire night'

People looking to compare pet insurance have been warned that many pets will struggle to cope with this weekend's bonfire night celebrations.

A survey of 2,000 people, conducted by the Co-operative Banking Group, found that 52 per cent of pet owners felt that their pets could not handle the commotion of the yearly festivities.

Common causes of distress for pets include fireworks themselves, with 80 per cent of pet insurance customers saying that their animal suffers because of the noise.

The insurer advised animal lovers to keep their pets away from any celebrations, as it revealed that five per cent of animals had been injured at some time on bonfire night.

Lee Mooney, head of pet insurance at The Co-operative Insurance, said: "Animals have a much more acute sense of hearing than adults and whilst we can enjoy Bonfire Night celebrations with minimal stress, household pets very often cannot."

Earlier this week, the Co-operative insurance outlined how this time of year is difficult for animals, with the clocks going back also being a cause for stress due to the change in daylight hours.
