Potential pet insurance owners must be able to exercise...

It is important people considering buying a dog ensure that they can give their pooch the time and attention they require, according to The Pet Experience.

The organisation advised potential pet insurance policyholders that it is imperative they can provide their canine friend with the right amount of exercise by walking them twice a day, every day, irrelevant of the weather.

Sarah Linehan, dog trainer and pet behaviourist at The Pet Experience, said: "Every healthy adult dog should receive a bare minimum of one and a half hours walking every day. If your lifestyle won’t accommodate this then you either need to employ a dog walker or you shouldn’t have a dog in the first place."

According to research by Churchill Pet Insurance, over one million dog owners leave their animals shut in a single room when they are away from their homes, with some canines locked away for hours while people are at work.

On top of this, more than one in ten Brits stated that they do not take their pooch out for a walk if the weather is poor.
