Regular treatment 'can reduce vet bills'

Cutting back on regular treatments for pets could increase the risk of expensive vet bills in the long term, it has been claimed.

According to insurer M&S Money, a single treatment to reduce the risk of fleas in household pets costs around £4, while vet bill to treat the condition can reach as much as £2,000.

The group went on to say most insurance policies will not cover the cost of treating illnesses that should have already been vaccinated against.

Insurance manager at the group Judith Roberts commented that regular treatments can help to reduce the likelihood of pets suffering from common conditions.

John Darlington of Bestpet Pharmacy added: "Even if a pet is insured they need to be treated regularly to prevent suffering and avoid potential claims as well as possible premium increases."

Last week, research from Sainsbury's Bank indicated that Rottweilers are the most expensive breed of dog to insure.
