A new report has highlighted the importance of pet insurance, according to Asda Financial Services.
Recent research by information group CCH has revealed that vets are the most profitable businesses in Britain.
Asda states that this should serve as a wake-up call to pet owners as treatments for sick animals do not come cheap.
Gideon Ingham from Asda said: "Gone are the days when animal lovers only visited the vet for tablets, neutering and putting pets to sleep."
He added these days pets receive the kind of treatments "you'd associate with humans including heart surgery, cancer care and alternative medicines".
Mr Ingham stated research that suggests less than a quarter of pets are insured is worrying.
Direct Line states that the total a dog owner can expect to spend over the lifetime of their pet is £22,500, according to a report in the Guardian.
