Planned rises in Air Passenger Duty (APD) will affect travel insurance customers heading on long-haul breaks more, with many of them having to reduce visits to family and friends.

ABTA - The Travel Association claimed that its recent research showed that the fee rises will impact greatly on people travelling to relatives abroad.

The poll found that 60 per cent of those in the lowest social bands and two-thirds of ethnic minorities think the APD increase will adversely affect them.

Mark Tanzer, chief executive of ABTA, said: "Air Passenger Duty is a particularly cruel tax as it prevents many families already suffering the effects of the recession from visiting their friends and relatives overseas."

He added that the rises are "unjustifiable" and many people will not be able to afford them.

The new charges are due to come into effect on November 1st this year, with bands being created depending on the miles travelled.
