Backpackers 'prepared to splash the cash on their travels'

Backpackers are willing to "spurge" on things such as food, clothes and travel insurance to make sure they have the best possible time while on the road, according to Lonely Planet.
Tom Hall, travel editor for the publisher, said that backpackers' tastes seemed to be "moving a little bit upmarket" and they were "recognising the value of saving before they go".
He added that the contribution that backpackers made to the travel industry could be larger than was widely recognised as they were "much better than other groups of travelers for putting money directly into the hands of local operators".
This month, InsureandGo reported that the average backpacker spends £3,764 on their trip, including transport, travel insurance, food, entertainment, clothes and medical expenses.
Approximately 8.3 per cent were found to spend more than £10,000 on their holiday-of-a-lifetime.
A typical backpacker also takes valuables worth £1,097 with them on their travels.
