New research has highlighted the importance of travel insurance for British travellers.

A survey by Cater Allen Private Bank has found 54 per cent of Brits are not content to laze around on the beach when they go on holiday but prefer to take part in some kind of activity.

Some 26 per cent of those questioned said they intended to go trekking while on holiday, while 12 per cent planned to go scuba diving and five per cent of Brits were keen to try snowboarding or sandboarding.

Earlier research by Cater Allen has revealed that 26 per cent of holidaymakers from the UK wanted to explore somewhere off the beaten track and ten per cent were keen to go on specialist activity holidays.

Managing director at Cater Allen Richard Dunn said: "This research show that Britons are moving away from the traditional European family holidays and becoming more adventurous in their holiday choices."

Elsewhere, Travelsupermarket claims that as the credit crunch tightens its grip people will take less short breaks.
